Meet Jordane Payne-Roberts
Welcome to The Club Diaries: A spotlight series amplifying the incredible people within our Club community doing wonderful things!
Meet Jordane Payne-Roberts, 23 year old creative and Club member who is currently completing her masters degree in Film Production and freelancing as a photographer and videographer.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your creative journey?
My creative journey started with my obsession with photography which stems from my parents who appreciated capturing moments in time. I studied photography at GCSE through to college where I gained a creative eye for portrait and lifestyle photography. Initially, it was a passion but through studying Media production as an undergrad and a master's in Film Production, I realised that there were other avenues I could pursue in the creative industry.
“I hope to start my own production company so that I can create content that tells stories about the people who exist within our community.”
What inspired you to pursue freelance photography & videography?
Becoming a freelancer has been a journey within itself, I love the freedom that comes with working for yourself. I decided to pursue photography and videography so that I could collaborate with other creatives and learn more about the industry. Whilst studying I’ve been able to work on projects and take my skills to the next level.
How do you ensure you get the rest you need when balancing the Student & Freelancer life?
If I’m being completely honest, rest does not exist at the moment. My friends recommended that I take 15 minutes every morning and evening for myself. 15 minutes where nothing disrupts your day; it is a great way to just take a break and decompress. I’ve used the time doing different things such as watching a show, praying, meditation and even a little bit of retail therapy. Anything that can take your mind off of any stress, do it!
Have there been times when you've doubted yourself as a creative & if so how did you navigate through it?
All the time! I used to struggle with self-belief due to suffering from anxiety and low self-esteem. Working in the creative industry is a constant battle as there is always something to learn and you find yourself competing with people in the industry. I navigated this by focusing on my strengths and taking the time to improve my skills which have built confidence in myself and my work. I’ve found prayer to be very helpful as speaking to God helps me centre myself and disregard any negativity that I may be feeling.
“Lastly, writing out clear weekly goals personally and professionally allows me to track my progress whether it's big or small. This way I can celebrate the small wins and push myself to grow each week.”
If there's one message you want people to take away from your work, what would that be?
There is so much beauty in capturing black people at the moment and for our stories to finally become the norm. Through my work, I hope to inspire more creativity in the industry.
“Inclusivity comes in many different forms and It’s vital for the next generation to grow up seeing representation on the screen.”
