#InConversation with Ohemaa

#BGFCommunity is our new spotlight series featuring brands and businesses led by Black women and non-binary people.

This month, we meet Jen Bafi, founder of By Ohemaa — a brand that does not conform to norms and gives room to self-expression in bold, bright & chic designs.

Jen shares more about her experience starting a business, becoming a vendor at Black Girl Festival and her plans for growing her business.

Jen Bafi

How would you describe your brand/business?

By Ohemaa is a brand that does not conform to norms and gives room to self-expression in bold, bright & chic designs.

Born out of a love for print and a passion for individuality, I started By Ohemaa to showcase the bold, vibrant and unique aesthetics found in African wax fabrics. This has evolved over the years as my desire for colour & to create textures has grown.

I’m self-taught and use a unique mix of fabric and ribbon with silk, beads or metal designed into a jewellery range that challenges your perception and sets itself apart from the rest.

Why did you want to be a part of Black Girl Festival?

I like what Black Girl Fest is working to achieve, giving us, black British women a platform where we are often overlooked, but in a space that is just ours, is everything!

How was being a vendor at the festival?

Being a part of the festival in 2019, was overwhelmingly refreshing. It was so nice to see so many women of colour expressing all that is beautiful about being black. There was a real essence of belonging, support, love & unity. The feedback from all the visitors was so positive & encouraging. The organisation was on point & the programme offered something for everyone.

What was it like being surrounded by other businesses owned by Black British women?

It felt really empowering as there was a sense of community, with everyone connecting & supporting each other. I met so many amazing women of all different talents, and seeing the many different industries we span over, was encouraging.

What does community mean to you?

Unity. Being able to come together to support one another and be united towards a common outcome.
