#BGFAcademyAlumni - Eilish Marie Bailey
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your creative journey?
My name is Eilish, whilst on the programme I was completing my A-levels and I have finally finished now! I love photography and videography and spent sixth form doing creative subjects. I’m hoping to gain experience and experiment with different roles within the creative industry as I don’t plan to go to university; I would like to start work in the industry.
As an alumni of the BGF Academy 2022, how did the program support your work?
The BGF Academy supported my work by helping me harness my skills. Through attending workshops, I gained knowledge of the creative industry and learned from established photographers and creative/art directors.
Has there been a time where you doubted yourself as a photographer and if so how did you navigate through it?
When I doubt myself, I try my best to avoid procrastination as this impacts on my work. I ask for advice from people that I’m close to like friends and family and try to push through and focus on creating and posting my work despite the doubts.
Who are some of your inspirations within your field?
Melina Matsoukas, Nadia Lee Cohen, Nwaka Okparaeke, Otis Dominique.
What’s next for you on your journey?
I want to work on personal projects so that I can build my portfolio as a photographer/videographer. I also plan to gain more experience on sets shooting BTS or assisting.
One piece of advice for young Black girls wanting to pursue a career in photography?
My advice is to go for it! If your passionate about what you do post it, apply to programs, apply to jobs, ect. without overthinking. Don’t let the fear of rejection stop you from getting new opportunities it’s better to take the risk rather than regret it later. You never know what could happen, just be confident and put yourself out there.
